چکیده

In this paper, we evaluate the performance of the logical link control (LLC) layer and the Transmission control protocol (TCP) layer in General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) networks. We evaluate the uplink throughput and delay performance of GPRS-LLC protocol with radio link control (RLC) layer using block level retransmission (BLR), as defined in the current GPRS standards, and compare it with that of using slot level retransmission (SLR) at the RLC. We investigate the optimum choice of parameters (e.g., number of retransmission attempts) for the ARQ schemes at the RLC and the LLC layers. Our results show that it is more beneficial to do the error recovery by allowing more retransmissions at the RLC layer than at the LLC layer. We show that SLR performs better than BLR. We also study the impact of SLR on the TCP performance.

Performance Analysis of RLC/MAC Protocol in General Packet Radio Service

We analyze the throughput and delay performance of the radio link control/media access control (RLC/MAC) protocol layers in General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) networks. Several time-slotted uplink radio frequency channels are shared by the mobiles on a request reservation based multiple access scheme. Using the theory of Markov chains, we derive expressions for the uplink throughput and delay ...

Performance evaluation of retransmission mechanisms in GPRS networks

This paper studies the performance of the three retransmission mechanisms (i.e., RLC/MAC, LLC and TCP) in a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network accessing the Internet. This assessment is done through the end-to-end performance evaluation of Internet applications such as HTTP and FTP over GPRS. A simulation platform including client Mobile Stations, Base Station Subsystems, GPRS Support ...

Improving TCP Performance over Multi-Slot GSM

In this paper, we examine the effects of TCP over a Multi-Slot GSM testbed as well as improving the performance of TCP using a smart link-level retransmission scheme. The smart link-level retransmission scheme (also known as the Snoop Protocol [1]), which was developed at the University of California in Berkeley, was designed to reduce the number of duplicate acknowledgements from returning to ...

Internet Engineering Task Force Spurring Tcp Retransmission upon Wireless Uplink Losses

In this informational draft, a simple TCP-level method to tackle unnecessarily inflated TCP retransmission timeout (RTO) value due to non-congestion losses over wireless uplink is evaluated. This method works between the handset and the intermediate node, and does not require the changes on legacy TCP implementations on wireline side. It uses one bit, named Kick (K) bit, from the TCP header to ...

Evaluating the Eifel Algorithm for TCP in a GPRS Network

Large and sudden variations in packet transmission delays are often unavoidable in GPRS. This may cause spurious timeouts in TCP. Spurious timeouts affect TCP performance in two ways: (1) the TCP sender unnecessarily reduces its load, and (2) the TCP sender is forced into a go-back-N retransmission mode. The Eifel algorithm avoids these consequences. We evaluate the performance of the Eifel alg...
